Dream Box

Dreambox adalah sebuah STB DVB berbasis Linux. Perangkat ini diproduksi oleh Dream Multimedia TV, sebuah perusahaan multimedia asal Jerman. Perangkat lunak yang dipergunakan oleh dreambox ini pada awalnya dibuat untuk DBox2 oleh proyek Tuxbox. DBox2 adalah rancangan proprietary yang didistribusikan oleh Kirch Media untuk layanan TV berbayarnya. Kirch Media sendiri akhirnya mengalami kebangkrutan.

Dreambox memiliki rancangan dasar yang sama dengan DBox2, termasuk port ethernet dan prosesor PowerPC. Sebagian besar perangkat lunak yang ada di dreambox memiliki lisensi GPL dan mempergunakan API Linux standar termasuk Linux DVB API dan Linux Infrared Remote Control (LIRC).

Gambar di atas adalah 2 produk DVB Receiver (DiZiPiA DS-3300IR dan Dreambox DM500S) dan sebuah DiSEqC Box MP880+.

Dreambox ada di tumpukan atas, sementara DiZiPiA di bawahnya.

Kalau di dunia linux yang umum kita mengenal distro, maka di sini ada juga varian-varian linux untuk STB ini yang lebih dikenal dengan sebutan images. Untuk perangkat DM500S, Dream Multimedia mempergunakan image Gemini. Image lain yang banyak beredar di internet antara lain PLi, Neutrino, Nemesis, dll.

Seperti layaknya linux box biasa, kita pun bisa bebas menambah/mengurangi/memodifikasi apa yang sudah terinstal di perangkat ini. Banyak pula addon dan plugin tambahan yang telah disediakan oleh pihak ketiga, misalnya kita bisa menambahkan browser, rss reader, mail client, dll dengan mudah. Coba bandingkan dengan produk DVB proprietary lainnya, bakalan susah kalau mau memodifikasi perangkat.

Nah yang ini umpan rss punya nya Paman Tyo. Lumayan bisa baca-baca langsung di depan TV.

Kelebihannya kalau dibandingkan dengan DVB PCI/USB yang biasa kita pasang di komputer adalah dreambox sudah dilengkapi dengan pembaca kartu pintar (smartcard reader), sehingga kita tidak hanya terbatas menyaksikan siaran FTA tapi juga bisa menyaksikan layanan tv berbayar (misalnya Indovision, Telkomvision, Astro – eh asto ma dah tewas yak). Untuk mengoperasionalkannya pun tidak dibutuhkan komputer, langsung tancepin aja ke tv.

Oh iya, salah satu fitur yang cukup menggoda adalah dreambox bisa dipakai untuk berbagi kartu (card sharing).

Dengan fitur ini kita bisa menonton layanan TV berbayar di lebih dari 1 tv hanya dengan memakai 1 smartcard. Tentu saja ini ilegal kalo dikomersilkan, walaupun banyak juga di internet yang menawarkan layanan ilegal ini dengan biaya murah.

Perangkat ini di Indonesia dibandrol dengan harga sekitar 1 juta rupiah.

STB DVB yang berbasis linux sebenarnya tidak hanya dreambox, masih banyak juga produk lainnya.
